DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA - The food prices in most of Dar es Salaam markets have gown down compared to prices recorded in January through to May this year.
A quick survey conducted by East African Business Week in Dar main market of Kariakoo revealed that the price of the best quality rice that was previously hovering at $1.58 (Ts 2,500) is now selling at $1.38 (Tsh 2,200) a kilogram while the second grade rice that was previously selling at $1.26 (Tsh 2,000) is now going at $1.13 (Tsh 1,800) a kilogram.
The survey also revealed that the price of beans that was selling at $1. 13 (Tsh 1,800) a kilo between January and May this year has now been reduced to $0.88 (Tsh 1,400) a kilogram while the price of soya beans has gone down from $0.94 to $0.75 (Tsh 1,500 to Tsh 1,200)
Mr. Peter Stanslus a trader at the Kariakoo main market in Dar es Salaam said the reduction of food prices has mainly been attributed to the harvest season.
"We have a lot of food products from upcountry because this is the harvest season which began early June through to August this year and that has led to the prices of food products to go down" Stanslus said.
He however noted that while he was making an average of $0.18 and $0.25 (Tsh 300 and Tsh 400) profits on the reduced prices he was selling to customers, he is surprised to see that some of the traders at the market selling food products at the same prices as before despite the bumper harvests that flocked the market.
"There are traders who are still selling rice, beans, soya beans and other food products at the high prices which is really shocking" Stanslus said.
Mr Stanslus said that traders were expecting the food prices to stabilize even up to the end of the harvest season and expect the prices to rise again the coming rainy season between November and December this year.
East African Business Week also found out that the prices of meat in most of the butchers in Dar es Salaam that was previously selling between $3.79 and $4.42 (Tsh 6,000 and Tsh 7,000) early this year has gone down to $2.52 (Tsh 4,000) a kilogram.
